CONSTRUCTION TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM (CTOP)
CTOP provides marketable skill credentials and immediate, entry-level, employment opportunities in construction work for unemployed, unskilled, or low-income adults, both women and men. Applicants for training are recruited from Northern Virginia and generally enter a five-week construction training program that includes full time employment. There is no charge to those accepted into the program.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the program, applicants must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be a resident of Northern Virginia
  • legally able to work in the U.S.
  • pass an Adult Basic Education Test
  • be able to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • have a current driver’s license, or be able to obtain a restricted license before class begins
  • have a car or a reliable plan of transportation
  • meet low-income guidelines
  • be drug free and able to pass random drug screens
  • attend an initial orientation meeting
  • commit to full time participation, including case management services.

Training in Chantilly, VA
For people interested in construction work, the CTOP program is currently registering applicants for its next General Construction training class which will begin July 21, 2008 and takes place in Chantilly, VA. The core-training curriculum of this class, taught by Associated Builders and Contractors, includes, but is not limited to, Basic Safety, Introduction to Construction Math, Hand Tools, Power Tools, Basic Rigging, Blueprints, OSHA Regulations, First Aid/CPR, and a bus tour field trip to two construction sites.

Services
Trainees receive the following services during their CTOP participation: marketable skills training and skills certification from a recognized provider in specific construction trades including OSHA and CPR certification; ongoing case management services with regular contacts from trained case managers who address barriers to employment; referrals to additional community resources; soft skills training essential to keeping jobs, such as goal-setting, financial management, and conflict resolution; job readiness; interviewing skills; and employer outreach that includes full time employment.

Enrollment
To enroll in the July 2008 CTOP class, interested applicants must first attend an intake interview at one of the dates and locations shown below.
