Early Head Start is a federally funded community-based program
serving low-income expectant mothers and families with infants
and toddlers. The mission of EHS is to promote healthy prenatal
outcomes, enhance the development of very young children,
and promote healthy family functioning.
Healthy Families and Early Head Start support workers help
families struggling with a variety of risks, including personal
childhood histories of abuse or neglect. During all phases
of the program, emphasis is placed upon building each family's
strengths to make positive changes in their lives. This focus
has resulted in Northern Virginia Family Service's Healthy
Families and Early Head Start programs showing outstanding
success in promoting good prenatal care, healthy births, appropriate
child development milestones and prevention of child abuse
and neglect.
