Expands
Transitional Housing Program for Homeless Families
Oakton, Va., Dec. 8, 2006—More
families will be able to overcome homelessness and
build promising futures through the recent expansion
of Northern Virginia Family Service's (NVFS) BEST
Transitional Housing Program. In November, NVFS purchased
two townhomes in Prince William County with $250,000
from the Freddie Mac Foundation and $250,000 from
a Prince William County Community Development Block
Grant.

Announces Winners of 14th Annual CARE Award
Oakton, Va., Nov. 15, 2006—Northern Virginia Family
Service (NVFS) announced the winners of the 14th Annual
CARE Awards (Companies As Responsive Employers) on
Nov. 15 at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner. The CARE
Awards recognize outstanding local companies that
provide family friendly workplace policies and benefits.
Additionally, some important changes to the CARE Awards
beginning next year were announced.

Week, held this year from Nov. 19 to 25, Northern
Virginia Family Service (NVFS) is bringing about awareness
of the principle that families are the foundation

to celebrate their connections to family and community.

Offers New Holiday Gift Program for Local Low-Income
Families
Oakton, Va., Oct. 17, 2006—Northern Virginia
Family Service (NVFS) has created a new holiday gift
program called Gifting for Families that allows the
community to provide holiday cheer for NVFS client
families. NVFS has refined the process used in previous
years to make the program more efficient and enjoyable
for NVFS client families and donors.
Ways
to Work Program Helps Workers Gain Mobility
and Self-sufficiency
Oakton, Va., Oct. 16, 2006—The national Ways to Work
car loan program has helped working families achieve
remarkable gains in income, job retention and quality
of life, according to a new independent evaluation.
Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) has operated
a Ways to Work program in Oakton for more than two
years, helping 67 families advance.

of Community and Child Development Center Honored
Oakton, Va., Oct. 6, 2006—More than 50 people attended
a breakfast on Oct. 4 to celebrate the success of
the Georgetown South Community and Child Development
Center in Manassas and to honor community members
who have generously supported it. A joint effort of
Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS) and the Georgetown
South Community Council, the center was developed
to enhance the quality of life for local families.

Fifth Annual Golf Tournament Raises Nearly $45,000
for Programs that Benefit Children and Families
Oakton, Va., Sept. 29, 2006—About 100 golfers came
out for a memorable day of golf and camaraderie while
supporting children and families at the Fifth Annual
Golf Tournament on Sept. 28 at Stonewall Golf Club
in Gainesville, Va. The tournament raised nearly $45,000
for NVFS programs.

Katrina Project Helps Local Hurricane Evacuees Rebuild

One year after Hurricane Katrina made landfall, 100
percent of evacuees who have participated in the Katrina
Project of NVFS have developed a recovery plan and
have been connected to available community resources.

Initiative
NVFS invites men in Loudoun County to participate
in the Loudoun County Community Fatherhood Program
(LCCFP). Beginning in August, sessions will allow

Initiatives, a department within the Community Services
