Mary Agee - President and CEO

Mary Agee

President and CEO

Mary Agee, President and CEO of Northern Virginia Family Service, began her career with the organization as a Family Counselor in 1972. Over the last thirty years she has been instrumental in growing NVFS into the vital community resource that it is today -- employing over 300 professionals and providing a constellation of life-changing programs to Northern Virginia's families. From 1978-1988, Mary was Deputy Director of Northern Virginia Family Service and since 1988 has served as Executive Director and then Chief Executive Officer.

As CEO, Mary establishes program goals, provides leadership to the Board of Directors, represents NVFS in local and regional advocacy activities, oversees the organization's development efforts, and prepares the budget. Under Mary's leadership, NVFS has grown into the largest private non-profit human service organization in Northern Virginia.

Mary received both her BA in social welfare and MSW in psychiatric social work at University of California at Berkeley. She and her husband Phil live in Fairfax Virginia and have two grown children.

Anna Brent is a dedicated, results oriented CPA with more than 17 years of nonprofit experience developing and managing financial operations, cash flows, investments, budgets, forecasts, audit engagements, and tax preparation. As a seasoned Executive working with board, finance, and audit committees as part of the management team, she has developed financial systems, strategies, processes and controls that significantly improve net income potential and focus on achieving the overall nonprofit’s mission.

As the CFO, Anna has a hands on management style in the development and implementation of strategic plans and developing staff. She has solid planning and organization skills in coordinating all aspects of financial and operational project management from creation through to completion. She is a strong team builder and facilitator who fosters an atmosphere encouraging staff to produce accurate and timely results.
Anna received her BA in accounting from Simpson College and obtained her Masters in Business Administration at George Mason University. She is a member of the American Institute of CPAs, the Greater Washington Society of CPAs, and the American Society of Association and Executives. She and her husband Robert live in Ashburn, Virginia with their six children.

Ann McNerney joined Northern Virginia Family Service in June 2011 as the Chief Development Officer. In this role, she oversees all philanthropic giving, communications, marketing, community outreach & volunteer services for NVFS. She brings over 15 years of experience in non-profit management, most recently as the Assistant Director of Advancement at the Highland School in Warrenton, Virginia.

Ann began her career in consumer banking with First Virginia Bank (now BB&T) but found herself drawn to development work as a founding board member for Swing Fore the Cure, a local non-profit dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research.

Ann received her BS in Education from the University of Virginia and a MBA from George Mason University. She and her husband Kevin live in Oakton Virginia with their three sons.

Karen Allen - Director, Early Childhood Services

Karen Allen

Director, Early Childhood Services

Karen Allen (M.P.H., M.A., L.C.S.W.) has used her extensive experience in clinical and preventive mental health care and social services to lead NVFS’ Early Childhood Services. In her role as director, she oversees the agency’s Head Start and Early Head Start programs, which serve 700-800 children and pregnant families per year, as well as an ethnically-diverse education and support staff of 90.

Prior to her joining NVFS in 2009, Karen worked for 33 years with Metropolitan Family Services in Chicago, working as a family and group psychotherapist, program manager, and supervisor for the nonprofit.

Karen has been honored throughout her career for her social advocacy, child abuse prevention efforts and staff leadership. She earned her M.P.H. from Johns Hopkins University, an M.A./M.S.W. in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago, and a B.A. in Anthropology from Stanford University, and has completed certificates in Domestic Violence, Elder Abuse, and Parents as Teachers. She has been an exchange student in Asia and Europe, as well as long-term foster parent and host parent for young people from several countries.

Cyndy Dailey, MPA, is the Director for the NVFS Health and Mental Health Programs. Cyndy has spent the past 33 years working in the human service field within the international, military, county and nonprofit sectors. With almost 25 years at NVFS, Cyndy has held various positions, including the Director of Quality Improvement, Program Manager for the Counseling Services and Special Foster Care case manager and trainer. For the past five years, Cyndy has successfully transitioned two stand-alone nonprofits into NVFS upon acquisition. Through strategic leadership of a multicultural workforce, mental health, legal and social service programs for immigrant and refugee services have continued to thrive in Northern Virginia. Using her skills in developing and managing new initiatives, Cyndy will help shape NVFS’ Health Programs as our community and clients experience changes with the Affordable Care Act.
Beth Dargatis - Director, Finance

Beth has over twenty three years of accounting experience, with over fifteen of those years working with and for non-profits. She joined Northern Virginia Family Service in 1998. Beth manages the financial operations of the agency, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, monthly close, financial reporting, and grants management, as well as overseeing and managing audits by the agency’s independent auditors and numerous grant funders. She ensures that NVFS’ financial records are in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Federal compliance requirements. Beth is also responsible for the development and completion of the Finance Department’s goals and objectives. Beth provides leadership, planning, and project coordination to the staff in the Finance Department, while concurrently facilitating efficient operations to meet both agency and staff needs.

Beth’s work experience prior to NVFS was as an auditor with Deloitte, where she worked primarily with non-profit clients. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Accounting from Muhlenberg College. She and her husband David live in Vienna, Virginia.

Pam Ryan joined Northern Virginia Family Service in February of 2012 as Director of Development. In this role, she is responsible for annual giving programs, events, community outreach, and volunteer services in support of the organization. Prior to joining NVFS, Pam was a Development Associate at the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC) in Washington, DC, where she wrote grants and secured funding for FRAC’s state initiatives tasked with creating hunger-free communities in the District of Columbia and in Maryland. She began her career in the non-profit sector as Director of Development at Western Fairfax Christian Ministries (WFCM) after twenty-five years in the corporate world, including over ten years with IBM.

Andrea began her career with Northern Virginia Family Service in 2001 as a case manager working with at risk youth in local middle and high schools. During her 8 years with the organization she supervised Youth Initiatives Programs and was the Client Services Manager for the Survivors Fund Project; which served victims and survivors of the 9-11 attack on the Pentagon. Andrea spent a year working for the Baltimore City Health Department as the Deputy Director of a violence prevention program for youth before returning to NVFS as the Director of Quality Improvement.

Andrea has a BA in Psychology from Marymount University in Arlington, VA and a Master’s in Public Administration from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.
Sharon LeGrande - Director, Workforce Services

Director, Workforce Services

Sharon LeGrande serves as the Director of Workforce Services at Northern Virginia Family Service. Ms. LeGrande has been with NVFS for the past 15 years and has over 18 years of social work experience including over 13 years of program management experience. In addition to NVFS’ flagship Training Futures program, she is responsible for several key program areas at NVFS including transportation and the Small Business Entrepreneurship initiative.

She brings a financial services background to these program areas having worked in private banking and with credit counseling in prior years. Combined with her social work experience is enthusiastic about impacting individual and family outcomes for the long term. Ms. LeGrande holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Syracuse University.

John Odenwelder - Director, Quality Improvement

John Odenwelder

Director, Quality Improvement

John joined NVFS in 2011 as Director, Quality Improvement. In this role, he oversees agency performance management, strategic planning and continuous improvement efforts.

For the four years prior to NVFS, John led a team of 20 employees and 400 volunteers at Hogar Immigrant Services, providing legal, education, naturalization, and social services to Northern Virginia’s diverse immigrant population. Before that, he spent 15 years in the for-profit world, working in the US and overseas for telecom and Internet companies such as AT&T, Global One, and Equinix.

John was a 2010 Fellow of the Nonprofit Roundtable’s "Future Executive Directors" program. He was also a founding member of the Borromeo Legal Project and spent two years on the Membership Committee of Nonprofit NoVA. John now sits on the Board of Directors of the Literacy Council of Northern Virginia.

John was awarded a Bachelor’s degree in International Politics from Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service and an MBA from New York University. He lives in Arlington with his wife, Nancy, and their two young children.

Tonya has nearly 20 years experience helping organizations with their marketing communications, fundraising and special events. Her career includes positions with Fairfax community-based nonprofits, national associations, higher education, and a management training firm. At NVFS, Tonya's responsibilities include media relations, outreach and collateral to support agency mission and programs.

Tonya earned an M.S. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University and a B.S. in Corporate Communication from Ithaca College.

She is a graduate of Leadership Fairfax and has served on the Fairfax County Athletic Council. She and her husband, Matt, enjoy both playing
and watching sports, and are active members at their church in Burke.
