Frequently Asked Questions
1. What furniture donations do you accept?
Currently, we are not accepting general furniture donations. Should specific needs arise for an individual or family served by NVFS, we will post a request online detailing the specific request.
2. I have items to donate; will someone from NVFS pick these up from me?
Large donations need to be taken directly from the donor to the client, as NVFS does not have the means to transport large objects. In certain circumstances, smaller donations can be picked up by an NVFS employee. Donors will need to coordinate pickup logistics with the Community Engagement Specialist at 571.748.2532.
3. How do I volunteer at a thrift shop?
Those who want to do on-going volunteering at a thrift shop should attend a volunteer orientation first. Those making a short-term commitment, such as completing service hours, should contact the Volunteer Coordinator. For complete information on volunteering at a thrift shop, click here.
4. Can my child volunteer with me?
There is no minimum age for volunteers. However, we ask that parents or guardians accompany volunteers younger than 16. Mentors must be at least 21 years old. Younger children are encouraged to support NVFS by coordinating mini-drives in their schools, churches, scout troops, etc. on behalf of NVFS, participate in the Help the Homeless Walkathon, and promote the organization to their peers, when there are not volunteer opportunities appropriate at the time.
5. How do I make a donation to a thrift shop?
Both the Centreville and Falls Church Clock Tower Thrift Shops accept donations on Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sundays from 12 pm to 5 pm. For more information on donating to the thrift shops, click here.
6. What can I donate to the thrift shop?
All items donated to the thrift shops are sold as is; therefore, all donations must be clean and in good condition. The thrift shops sell clothing, books, housewares, gift items, collectibles, records, CDs, artwork, sporting goods, luggage, linens, estate goods, small appliances, and more. Items such as mattresses, pillows, and stuffed animals will not be accepted; please call a thrift store with any specific questions about items. For more information on donating to the thrift shops, including contact information, click here.
7. Why does NVFS discourage donating stuffed animals to the thrift shops or for toy drives?
Many of the children served by NVFS suffer from asthma, and giving them stuffed animals that are prone to collecting dust might trigger their symptoms.
8. My company wants to help NVFS during the holidays. Do you have an adopt-a-family gift program?
While we don't operate an adopt-a-family program, each year we conduct a gift card drive entitled, Gifting for Families as well as a toy drive. We serve a very multicultural clientele and must be sensitive to a variety of traditions. Gifting for Families empowers our clients to choose and purchase appropriate food and items for themselves. Companies are encouraged to participate in these important holiday initiatives.
9. I am in need of school supplies, and I see that you have a drive every year. How can I receive some of those supplies?
In order to be a recipient of supplies, one must be a client of NVFS and his/her case manager needs to recommend that the client receive resources.
