SERVE Programs
NVFS has significantly increased the services available at the SERVE campus so more of our community's most vulnerable individuals and families can get a wider variety of help to meet their needs as they progress on their paths to self-sufficiency.
Emergency Shelter for Families and Individuals
NVFS’ 60-bed emergency facility provided 33,000 nights of shelter last year to 120 families and 450 single adults; 41% of those bed nights were occupied by homeless children. During their stay, the focus is on providing clients with the tools and support needed for them to stabilize and obtain and maintain safe, affordable, permanent housing.
Continuum of Housing Services
NVFS views the resolution of housing insecurity as a single most impactful measure to immediately improve a family’s outlook. The only organization in Prince William providing a full continuum of housing services, NVFS owns 17 properties that provide transitional, permanent supportive and affordable housing and lease-to-own opportunities to help families on every step of their journey from homelessness to possible home ownership.
Emergency Assistance
In an emergency situation NVFS helps stabilize a client’s situation as quickly as possible whether it’s helping to pay an overdue utility bill, a loan for a car repair, negotiated rent payment or a week’s supply of food. Last year, $178,000 in cash assistance helped families avoid utility shut-off or eviction and emergency food assistance was provided to over 900 families every month.
Early Childhood Development
A strong foundation in the first years of a child’s life is critical to their emotional, behavioral, educational and physical development. Through home-based Early Head Start and Healthy Families programs, case managers help over 200 at-risk families build this strong foundation for their children. Additionally an Early Head Start classroom on the SERVE campus provides a safe learning environment for 0-3 year olds whose families have previously experienced homelessness.
Health Access
Prince William clients address important health care needs that would otherwise go unchecked with help from NVFS. Through partnerships with dentists and medical specialists, about 130 clients each month get connected to dentists and physicians who provide care and medication at reduced and free rates.
