Oakton,
Va., Sept. 22, 2005—Northern Virginia
Family Service is pleased to announce that
its Healthy Families Arlington (HFA) program
recently received a $1,500 grant from Target
to help support family group socialization
activities.
“We
are grateful to Target for its donation
to Healthy Families Arlington, which will
help us provide group socializations, such
as early literacy workshops, holiday parties
and family picnics, to many local families.
These are an important part of HFA’s parent
education efforts, providing peer-support
and sharing, opportunities for parent-child
socialization and information on topics
such as parents reading to their children,”
said NVFS President and CEO Mary Agee.
Healthy
Families Arlington, an NVFS program, is
a voluntary home visiting program, which
supports new parents and their young children
during a child’s most rapid and significant
phase of development. Started in 1997, the
program improves parenting, encourages child
health and development and prevents child
abuse and neglect. Affiliated with Healthy
Families America, a national initiative
of Prevent Child Abuse America, the program
is a public/private partnership funded at
the local and state level.
This
grant is part of the ongoing support Target
provides to local communities throughout
the country. Every week Target gives more
than $2 million to strengthen families and
communities across the nation, with a focus
on education, the arts, social services
and other vital community partnerships.
Established
in 1924, Northern Virginia Family Service
is a private, non-profit community service
resource dedicated to helping individuals
and families find new paths to self-reliance
and brighter futures. Each year, NVFS helps
more than 27,000 people find affordable
housing, counseling and child care; access
to low-cost medical and dental services;
foster and respite care, job training; trauma
recovery; and much more. For more information,
