Fashionable and friendly stewards are needed to manage the NVFS Clock Tower Thrift Shop’s women’s fashion department. The Women’s Fashion Steward will use creative expression to design, develop, and maintain visual displays that engage customers and stimulate sales! Stewards will manage departmental inventory, receive donations, restock merchandise and answer customer inquiries.
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and able to make a regular weekly commitment. Days of the week and times are flexible.

Electronics and gadgets enthusiast wanted! At the Clock Tower Thrift Shop, the Electronics Department Ambassador will perform quality checks on donated electronics to ensure proper working condition. The Ambassador will also address customer inquiries, organize the electronics department displays,  and maintain general upkeep of this section of the store to invite foot traffic, improve shopper experience, and encourage sales increase.
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and able to make a regular weekly commitment (times and days of week/weekend are flexible).

Thrift Shop Ambassador

Do you enjoy the retail environment? Are you a thrift store shopper yourself? Thrift Shop Ambassadors support the daily operations of the store, conduct merchandise appraisals and provide resourceful customer service to shoppers. As Thrift Shop Ambassador you will have the opportunity to work directly alongside the store manager to inspect merchandise, assign prices and determine specialty items for online sales, among other duties.

Volunteers are needed for regular shifts during the week and, most importantly, on weekends. Volunteers should be prepared to be on their feet; some lifting involved. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to volunteer on their own.

The NVFS Clock Tower thrift shop provides an affordable shopping experience to the community while generating revenue to support NVFS programs and services.

Shelter Meals Provider – SERVE

Bring the comfort and warmth of home-cooked meals to the homeless by volunteering as a shelter meals provider. This is a great small group (6-8 people) opportunity; volunteers must be at least 16 years old to be onsite at the shelter. Volunteers provide, prepare and serve nutritious meals for the 60-70 guests at the SERVE Family Shelter on weekends and holidays. Groups have the option to prepare offsite and deliver, or bring ingredients and prepare and serve onsite in the shelter kitchen. Weekend and holiday meals are preferred; weeknight dinners are also an option.

Classroom volunteers help teachers with daily activities for 3-5 year olds at our Head Start Center. Prepare, lead and support learn-through-play activities; read to students; supervise them on the playground, and help serve breakfast and lunch.

Bilingual Receptionist

Receptionist volunteers help run the front office at our Multicultural Center, which manages client check-in for our programs and for three INOVA clinics and supports daily office operations. Volunteers ensure that all clients are properly greeted, signed in and directed to appropriate staff. Kindness and support at the front desk are essential so that all visitors have a positive and efficient experience.

Duties:

  • Greet all clients and visitors in a busy waiting room
  • Answer questions, ensure that visitors sign in and are directed to the appropriate department for their appointment
  • Data entry and administrative support
  • Answer phone calls and provide referrals
  • Other projects, as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English
  • Strong verbal communication skills, good people skills and sound judgment
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment
  • Successful completion of a background check
  • Volunteers are requested to commit to at least one 4-hour shift per week. The center hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

ASL Interpreter

ASL interpreters are needed to be “on call” to interpret for adults with hearing impairment so that those families can get the services they need to move towards independence. This need resurfaces sporadically throughout the year so this ASL interpreter would be “on call” (with at least 24 hours advanced notice) when the need arises and there may be large gaps of time from one need to the next. Locations vary.

Support our littlest learners by becoming an Early Head Start Classroom Volunteer! In this role, volunteers will gain experience caring for and engaging with babies and toddlers in a classroom setting, experience the rewards of bringing delight to a child, and see children grow & progress developmentally. Volunteers are needed on weekdays from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. 

Duties include:

  • Assist classroom teachers with children’s activities.
  • Work with babies and toddlers to help them advance developmentally (ages 0-3).
  • Assist in caring for infants and babies during free play and circle time.
  • Assist with set-up and clean-up for breakfast and lunch.
  • Share a special skill, hobby or talent with the children! Ideas include: Music group, arts and crafts, yoga, etc.

If you have excellent communication skills, great attention to detail and a passion for helping the community, this role is for you! Assist the NVFS Bridging Affordability program in securing stable housing for homeless or precariously housed families throughout Northern Virginia by joining our volunteer team. You’ll make an impact and work with prospective clients to determine program eligibility.

Duties:

  • Return phone calls to families interested in the program to notify them of eligibility requirements and the registration process.
  • Review applications and assist in determining program eligibility.
  • Conduct client prescreens via telephone to get client contact, income and current housing situation information.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, including data entry, filing, copying, faxing and completing client packets.

Are you passionate about helping the homeless? Do you like to drive? Our Shelter Driver opportunity is perfect for you! SERVE needs dedicated volunteers to help transport shelter residents for work, job interviews & appointments, and offer them encouragement and support along the way. We supply the van and the gas! All driving is done locally within Prince William County. Access to transportation is a particularly significant barrier to self-sufficiency. You’ll feel great knowing you’re helping your homeless neighbors get help, find jobs and secure housing.

Food Recovery Driver

Every day, food goes to waste while families in our community go hungry. You can help cut down on food waste and get nutritious food to food insecure families. Sign up to be a Food Recovery Driver on weekday mornings, especially Mondays, to pick up donations from Manassas-area grocery stores/restaurants and deliver the food to our Hunger Resource Center, which distributes food packages to over 700 families each month.

Volunteers must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Drivers must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license; cargo van is provided. Teens can ride with drivers to assist. Ride-along training with experienced volunteer is provided. It’s a great workout, too!

If you’re bilingual in Spanish and English and a people person, the Food Assistance Client Intake Specialist is the role for you! You will greet clients arriving for food assistance, update their client information, complete required forms, process their request and check and return calls to the food assistance line. Are you passionate about hunger relief? Each month our Hunger Resource Center provides food assistance to over 600 families in the greater Prince William area. Volunteers are needed to prepare food packages, welcome and assist clients in the self-serve shopping area, check clients out before they leave, stock shelves and more. You’ll join a small team of mighty volunteers relieving hunger in the community. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds. Spanish speaking is a plus. Volunteer shifts are:
