Volunteers are needed to support the fundraising, special event and community engagement efforts of the Development & Communications Department at the NVFS Oakton office. This is a great opportunity to get hands-on admin skills practice, learn database support and get nonprofit management experience.

Duties include:

  • Update and input constituent information into the Raiser’s Edge database
  • Conduct online prospecting & researching to find new corporate and foundation grants that NVFS could apply for
  • Digitize and organize grant files into one comprehensive, accessible and searchable location
  • Enter in-kind gift data into the Raiser’s Edge database
  • Sort and file in-kind donation forms

Administrative Volunteer assists the NVFS Oakton office with various administrative support tasks so employees can more efficiently achieve programming goals. Duties include: compile and assemble mailings, conduct internet research for various programs, data entry, print and assemble training packets, assist with filing, shredding, copying and other administrative tasks. Qualifications: must be at least 16 years old, strong computer skills preferred, close attention to detail and ability to work independently. This is a great resume-building opportunity!

Volunteers support various administrative departments including development/fundraising, HR, finance, IT, evaluation and outcomes, etc.

Time commitment is 2-3 hour shift every week (schedule is flexible, during business hours).

Do you enjoy the retail environment? Are you a thrift store shopper yourself? Thrift shop helpers sort and organize incoming donations, tag items for sale, restock sales floor, rotate stock, restock and reorganize items on sales floor, etc. Must be able to stand for long periods. You can make this a one-time or ongoing activity on your own or with a group of up to 10 people.

The NVFS thrift shops are a critical unrestricted revenue source. All funds raised by the thrift shops directly support programs and services that help lift families out of poverty.

ASL Interpreter

ASL interpreters are needed to be “on call” to interpret for adults with hearing impairment so that those families can get the services they need to move towards independence. This need resurfaces sporadically throughout the year so this ASL interpreter would be “on call” (with at least 24 hours advanced notice) when the need arises.

NVFS locations that occasionally have this need are our family shelters in Manassas and Woodbridge, Multicultural Center in Falls Church and home visiting programs in Fairfax, Arlington and Prince William counties.

Receptionist volunteers help run the front office at our Multicultural Center, which manages client check-in for our programs and for three INOVA clinics and supports daily office operations. Volunteers and ensure that all clients are properly greeted, signed in and directed to appropriate staff. Your kindness and support, so they have a positive and efficient experience.

Duties: greet all clients and visitors in a busy waiting room, answer questions and ensure that visitors sign-in and are directed to the appropriate department for their appointment, enter data into spreadsheets, answer phones, provide referrals and  other projects, as needed.

Qualifications: must be at least 18 years old, bilingual in Spanish and English, strong verbal communication skills, good people skills and sound judgment, able to work in a fast-paced environment and successful completion of a background check.

Volunteers are needed to lead shelter children in recreational & educational activities on weeknight evenings while their parents attend life skills classes. Activities can include board games, crafts, stories, playground time, and your ideas. Volunteers should come prepared to lead these activities. Children range in age from toddler to pre-teen. On average, about 20-30 youth participate – that’s why this can be a great small group activity! Volunteers must be 16 or older to volunteer for this activity.

If you’re bilingual in Spanish and English and a people person, the Food Assistance Client Intake Specialist is the role for you! You will greet clients arriving for food assistance, update their client information, complete required forms, process their request and check and return calls to the food assistance line. Are you passionate about hunger relief? Each month our Hunger Resource Center provides food assistance to over 600 families in the greater Prince William area. Volunteers are needed to prepare food packages, welcome and assist clients in the self-serve shopping area, check clients out before they leave, stock shelves and more. You’ll join a small team of mighty volunteers relieving hunger in the community. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds. Spanish speaking is a plus. Volunteer shifts are:

  • Mondays, 1-3 p.m.
  • Tuesdays, 9:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m.

Volunteers enter crucial stakeholder data into NVFS database to ensure we accurately capture and track vital information. Your help will make it possible for NVFS to communicate accurate outcomes and true impact.

Duties Include: Inputting data into the Raiser’s Edge database system including adding constituents, entering volunteer hours, updating and correcting information and more.

The SERVE Shelter has great news: An increasing number of shelter guests are successfully gaining employment!

However, many of the positions are 5-11 p.m. which means guests are having to make their way home very late at night without transportation.

You can make a significant impact improving their safety by driving our guests in the SERVE van to a central pick-up location so they can get to their jobs and doing the reverse in the evening so they can get home safely.

Must be at least 21 years old with valid driver’s license.

Everyday food goes to waste while families in our community go hungry. You can help cut down on food waste and get nutritious food to food insecure families. Food Recovery Drivers are needed weekday mornings, especially Mondays, to pick up donations from Manassas-area grocery stores/restaurants and deliver the food to our Hunger Resource Center, which distributes food packages to over 700 families each month. Volunteers must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Drivers must be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver’s license; cargo van is provided. Teens can ride with drivers to assist. Ride-along training with experienced volunteer is provided. It’s a great work-out too!

SERVE needs dedicated volunteers to help transport shelter residents for work, job interviews & appointments, and offer them encouragement and support along the way. We supply the van and the gas! All driving is done locally within Prince William County. Access to transportation is a particularly significant barrier to self-sufficiency. Bring the comfort and warmth of home-cooked meals to the homeless. This is a great small group (6-8 people) opportunity. Volunteer groups provide, prepare and serve nutritious meals for the 92 residents at the SERVE Shelter on weekends and holidays. Meal groups have the option to prepare offsite and delivered or bring ingredients and prepare and serve onsite in the shelter kitchen. Weekend and holiday meals are preferred; weeknights dinners are also an option.

Volunteer tutors work in small groups with adults during their during the last month of their job training cycle, which is focused on getting and keeping a job. There are opportunities to assist trainees writing resumes and cover letters, conducting and critiquing mock interviews, and improving their public speaking. This is a short-term opportunity; there are two 5-week sessions per year (May/June and November/December). Very small 3-4 person corporate groups are a great fit!
