A Bat Mitzvah with a Big Impact

Emily reading to children in Early Start At Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS), we often say that strong communities start with small acts of care. Recently, one young leader reminded us just how powerful those acts can be.

Emily recently celebrated her bat mitzvah, a milestone that marks a meaningful transition and commitment to community responsibility. To honor the occasion, she chose to give back in a way that will have a lasting impact on Northern Virginia’s youngest learners.

Instead of traditional gifts, Emily asked friends and family to help her support children enrolled in NVFS’ Early Head Start program. She personally selected some of her favorite children’s books to share with classrooms and organized a drive that resulted in an incredible donation of 150 brand-new books.

Strengthening Early Literacy from the Start

The earliest years of life are critical for brain development. Through NVFS’ Early Head Start and Head Start programs, children build the foundational literacy, language, and cognitive skills that prepare them for kindergarten and lifelong success. And access to high-quality, age-appropriate books plays an important role in that journey.

Emily’s thoughtful project helps to ensures that children in our Early Head Start Center have even more opportunities to grow as confident, curious readers.

Inspired to Get Involved?

There are many ways to support NVFS’ Early Childhood Development programs:

  • Volunteer in a classroom

  • Make a financial contribution to expand learning resources

  • Share NVFS’ mission within your community

Every book donated, every hour volunteered, and every gift given helps ensure that Northern Virginia’s children have the tools they need to succeed in school and beyond.

Thank you, Emily, for helping young learners in our community!
