In early March 2026, a group of Culmore residents and their community strategic leaders came together to celebrate a milestone that started weeks earlier with a simple idea. What happens when neighbors improve their skills to step forward to lead?
After six weeks of learning, sharing, and building connections, 11 residents graduated from Northern Virginia Family Service’s (NVFS) Community Influencers Academy, turning that idea into action.
This was more than a ceremony. It reflected what is possible when people invest their time and efforts in their community and in each other.
Through our Community in Reach program, the Community Influencers Academy is a six-week, cohort-based program that brings together residents who want to take a more active role in their neighborhoods. Participants receive training and technical support to help them identify community needs, connect neighbors to resources, and work alongside local partners to strengthen their communities.
“It’s not just about planning programs or managing spaces—it’s about listening, understanding, and making sure the voices of residents are not only heard, but amplified,” said Eva Trappio-Delgado, MS, a Reston cohort participant in the Community Influencer Academy.

The graduation, held at the Mason District Government Center, brought together local leaders and partners, including Fairfax County Mason District Supervisor Andrés Jiménez, who recognized the cohort’s work and the important role residents play in shaping their communities.
Graduates (Crossroad Opportunity Neighborhoods’ Ambassadors) are now equipped to better help connect neighbors with resources and support ongoing community efforts. The connections formed and the dedication each participant brings will have a lasting impact across Culmore.
At NVFS, we are grateful to work alongside residents who are strengthening their community every day. For more information about the Community Influencers Academy, please reach out to Marvin Quintero at mquintero@nvfs.org.
