ADVISORY: KAINE TO VISIT MANASSAS, HERNDON, MCLEAN

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tomorrow, Saturday, March 7, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine will join members of his staff and other volunteers to distribute food to families in need at SERVE Family Shelter in Manassas. SERVE, which is run by Northern Virginia Family Service, provides support to individuals and families in western Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. The volunteer event is part of Kaine’s Citizen Days initiative, which allows him to share his passion for public service by bringing Virginians together to participate in service projects across the Commonwealth.

In the afternoon, Kaine will speak at the 2015 K-12 STEM Symposium in Herndon, where more than 2000 students, parents, and leaders in business and government will celebrate the importance of a strong Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education. Following his remarks, Kaine will visit with local students showcasing their achievements in STEM. As a former Governor and current chair of the Senate Career and Technical Education (CTE) Caucus, Kaine is a longtime supporter of STEM and CTE initiatives in Virginia and across the nation.

In the evening, Kaine will speak at the 2nd Annual “Cracking the Cure” gala to benefit the Smashing Walnuts Foundation, which was started by Gabriella Miller, a young girl from Leesburg who became a global advocate for childhood disease research after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Kaine was a Senate champion of the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act, legislation named in Gabriella’s honor that supports federal funding for pediatric medical research. The bill passed Congress and was signed into law by President Obama in April 2014. At the event, Kaine and U.S. Senator Mark Warner will receive Change Maker Awards from the Smashing Walnuts Foundation for their leadership, dedication and support of the Gabriella Miller Kids First Research Act.
