NVFS Equips Kids in Back-to-School Drive

Partnership with individuals and organizations,
including Apple Federal Credit Union, yields hundreds
of backpacks filled with supplies.

OAKTON, VA—September
10, 2009—
Northern Virginia Family Service (NVFS)
would like to thank all of the individual, corporate
and anonymous donors who have made this year’s
backpack drive such a huge success. Over the course
of just a few weeks, NVFS received and delivered nearly
800 backpacks filled with supplies. This success was
due, in part, to a collaboration with Apple Federal
Credit Union’s (AFCU) annual “Stuff the
Bus” campaign.

Our primary donors, who wish to remain anonymous,
donated 323 backpacks and many supplies we used to
fill the bags. Other key contributors to this drive
included Apple Federal Credit Union (over 50 backpacks),
the Old Presbyterian Meeting House (38 backpacks),
United Healthcare (38 backpacks), Datatel (47 backpacks),
and Northern Virginia Church of Christ (40 backpacks).

The total value of donated backpacks and school supplies
was nearly $40,000 this year, all of which will go
to assisting children in need in Northern Virginia.
Nearly $6,000 in cash donations and an additional
$1,000 in gift cards were also given as part of this
drive. With distribution set up to benefit children
in need, some additional supplies were distributed
to our Training Futures workforce development program,
as well as our ESL classes.
