“Goals, Not Gangs”: 2016 Youth Initiatives Soccer Tournament

In June 2016, the Northern Virginia Regional Gang Task Force held its annual soccer tournament with the theme of “Goals, Not Gangs.” One-hundred youth from across Northern Virginia participated, including four participants in NVFS’ gang prevention program. The event was supported by more than 50 volunteers, countless parents and fans, and sponsoring organizations: Alexandria Soccer Association, Alexandria Gang Prevention Community Task Force, Friends of Argus And Aurora House and NVFS.

Soccer tournaments such as this one have captured the attention of many at-risk youth in Northern Virginia. They provide a positive activity that breaks barriers between diverse youth populations, as well as the barriers between youth and the adults who are able to support them.

Congratulations to the tournament champions from George Washington Middle School (City of Alexandria) and to the second-place trophy winners from Southgate Community Center (Fairfax County)!
