The Impact Created by Our Volunteers

As 2017 comes to a close, we at NVFS can’t help but reflect on the past 12 months and the impact we have made in our community together. With the tremendous help of our partners and volunteers, we as a community have been able to uplift our neighbors to new milestones.

We wouldn’t be able to do what we do if it weren’t for our volunteers who show up every day with a passion and heart for service. Lending a helping hand through volunteerism goes a long way in the lives of those in need. NVFS is proud of the strides our clients have made with your help. And you can see the impact you’re making, too.

“Because of NVFS… I was able to make an impact immediately on the students at Training Futures and help them in their future careers.” – Jake Lewitz, NVFS volunteer at Training Futures

“Because of NVFS… I get to repay the help I got when I was younger by assisting kids with homework or adults with computer questions.” – William Schuppert, NVFS volunteer at the SERVE Family Shelter

“Because of NVFS… I feel like I’m helping people think about making healthier choices.” – Anita Eggleton, NVFS volunteer at the Hilda Barg Homeless Prevention Center

“Because of NVFS… I’m helping to get these young people off to a strong start with a good sense of their own capabilities.” – Christina Gardner, NVFS volunteer at Head Start

Because of NVFS… 35,000 individuals and families in Northern Virginia are able to achieve self-sufficiency, 98 percent of Head Start children are ready to begin kindergarten, 7,200 families a year receive food assistance through NVFS’ Hunger Resource Center and more.

Because of NVFS, Northern Virginia is becoming a better place for everyone, at every stage of his or her life, to be given the opportunity to contribute to a thriving community.

“Because of NVFS… I found direction and purpose in my life and learned the importance of perseverance,” said Mario, a teen on the verge of abandoning his goals.

Through NVFS’ Intervention, Prevention and Education (IPE) Program, Mario worked one-on-one with a counselor to rebuild a sense of self-worth and achievement. Mario later found purpose in joining the step team at his school and worked tirelessly to ensure his grades were high enough to remain on the team.
